Facebook. The beginning?
Social media was certainly turned on its head with the introduction of Facebook in 2004 from the Harvard College room of Mark Zuckerberg. Initially it was only meant for Harvard students, but quickly grew in popularity, first expanding to other colleges in the area then to local high schools. Now there are more than 1.18 billion active users Worldwide with an average of 4.5 billion likes a day and being valued at over $300 billion. Pretty incredible considering its small beginnings.
Mark became a self-made billionaire by the age of 23, and has become known as the Internet Entrepreneur. Interested in computers from a young age, his father taught him basic programming when he was in middle school. His advanced understanding got him some attention in his high school days with Jose Vargas, a writer who interviewed the young Mark Zuckerberg noted, “Some kids played computer games. Mark created them.”
What’s Facebook got to do with camp?
Now, I hear you asking »What’s Facebook got to do with camp? « Well, believe it or not the shy, recluse and somewhat awkward computer genius spent many of his summers at Island Lake Camp, a summer kid’s camp based out of Pennsylvania. This picturesque camp is set on 550 acres that includes two large lakes where their many water sports are played. They have lots of trails too for their Equestrian, Mountain Biking, and Pioneering programs, something for all shapes and forms.
So, every time you sit down to write one of the 350 comments that are posted every 60 seconds on Facebook, remember that a camper was behind this incredible creation!
