Steve Hartley
Camp Director

More than 14 years of camping experience within Slovenia having run an international camp based in Slovenia with Berlitz Language School. There he was a Berlitz Language School Global Quality Assurance Team Member, Area Kids’ and Teens’ Coordinator (Slovenia, Italy, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech), Area Kids’ and Teens’ Camp Coordinator, and Area Kids’ and Teens’ Trainer. He created Explorer Camps four years ago, growing it by more than 200% while reaching children from over 18 different countries. 

His vision as been to make a difference to every child that comes to camp, helping them become more self-confidence, and boosting their self-belief. 

 

Robert White
Senior Counselor

Has over 25 years teaching experience with a Master’s Degree in Physical Education specializing in Outdoor Experiential Education and Leadership, as well as being a PADI Certified Master Scuba Diver Instructor, and a NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) trained and certified Mountaineering Educator. Currently in his 4th year at Explorer Camps, and is a certified Emergency First Responder who trains and certifies all of the Explorer team. 

His vision is to help campers aim higher, challenging them to do things they had never experienced before. The camp moto "When's the last time you did something for the first time?" was his creation. 

Rebecca Picarella
Senior Counselor

She has worked with the Camp Director for more than 7 years on camps, previously at Berliz and now in her 4th year at Explorer Camps. She's currently Assistant Director of the Art Department at a U.S. based camp, and previously was an English teacher / counsellor at the Berlitz Kids’ Camps in Slovenia. Was employed as a teacher at the Q.S.I. school in Ljubljana for 3 years as a kindergarden and year 1 teacher, where now she's a year 1 teacher at the European International School in Ljubljana. 

Her vision is to bring campers more into touch with their creative side through a wide range of arts activities including painting, pottery, drawing, and slime making. Adding to this, she's an experience rock climber who helps run the climbing activities on camp. 

Tomaž Škafar
Senior Counselor

Qualified P.E. teacher who has taught at a wide range of public schools in Slovenia. Currently is a P.E. teacher at QSI an international school based in Ljubljana. He has an enormous amount of experience running camps in Slovenia at numerous summer and winter camps. Certified in a number of outdoor activities including sailing, water rescue, rock climbing, hiking, biking, and canoeing. 

His vision is to support campers in becoming stronger and more independant, challenging them to step out of their comfort zones and try something new. His goal is to help campers enjoy the outdoors, seeing the beauty of the world while doing cool activities.
