Our story starts with a hero.
And no, I don’t mean superheroes with capes because they simply don’t exist. A REAL hero is just an ordinary person doing extraordinary things for others.
One such hero is my mum.
In many ways, any mother is the most sacrificing person one can think of. For most of us she is our first hero, which we only start to realise over time, as we see more of life and are mature enough to understand how much she really means to us.
Looking back, my mother played an important role in shaping me as a person, through her thoughts, values and valuable lessons. My learning from hear laid the foundation for Explorer Camps.
Be a hero by always looking to help others in need and put them first.
UNDERSTANDING OUR YOUTH
And then the hero is gone.
At the age of 13 my mum passed away without any real warning. That inner spark and happiness were lost. I lost ‘me’.
The dark days turned to months, which in turn stretched out into years. Those moments staring up at the ceiling questioning my worth. Wondering whether the world would miss me. Convincing myself that I was a complete failure and a let-down, even though I still had that inner hero and happiness deep down inside.
Just like all children, I needed help in those moments when I was lost. Someone who could listen without making judgement. Someone to inspire me to step outside of my comfort zone, rather than keep hiding away. Someone who could just be there to be a friendly face.
This memory has stayed with me forever, and has been a key motivator behind the creation of Explorer Camps.
AWAKENING THE INNER EXPLORER
The hero is reborn.
The true birth of Explorer Camps came at my very first kids’ camp in Slovenia in 2002. It was here I helped a young boy on his journey of self-discovery and inner happiness just when he needed it most. He had also lost his mother at a young age, and was experiencing the same dark feelings I had experienced all those years ago.
However, through the power of camps we were able to awaken that inner Explorer in him so he could smile once again. He was genuinely happy, and better yet, he used his happiness to inspire others. At this moment I truly realised what an empowering tool camps can and should be.
In many ways, camp became my shining light as it helped me rediscover my inner spark and happiness. It was the stepping stone for me being a better father to my two children. It allowed me to inspire others to become heroes themselves!
Children need to feel an enduring sense of friendship, comfort and belonging, which we offer through the magic of the camp experience.
