Empowering Independence

At Explorer Camps, teens choose their own path. In groups like Outlaws, Trailblazers, and Pathfinders, you’re trusted to make decisions—building confidence, empathy, and independence. Parents appreciate the real-world skills; teens love the freedom to grow.

At camp, teens bond with peers from different walks of life and build truly meaningful friendships. Through team challenges and downtime, our activities spark genuine connections that last. Your teen belongs here—and parents love seeing lasting bonds form.

PROGRESSIVE PROGRAM PLANNING - LEADER-IN-TRAINING

Start with small responsibilities, earn bigger freedoms as you level up to the final Leader-In-Training Program (if you want to)—with just 15 minutes a day of leadership woven right into camp fun. Each summer, you tackle tougher challenges, take on real leadership roles (like mentoring or event planning), and face natural consequences that build true confidence. No extra hours, no boring lessons—just earning more trust, flexibility, and respect while doing epic camp stuff. Parents see you come home ready for anything; you get bragging rights that actually matter. This is how you grow up, not just get older.

Outlaws (13-14 years)

Teen’s first real taste of leadership—no pressure, just pride. They get the freedom with Afternoon Choice and in the Campers’ Corner, lead house clean-ups, and mentor two younger campers through hands-on guidance (not lectures). Parents see accountability grow; teens gain that real confidence only earned by doing. Simple wins, zero fluff—just camp magic with purpose.

Trailblazers (15-16 year olds)

Where leadership gets real—and actually fun. Trailblazers design their own camp-approved schedule, run campfire singalongs, and coach colour-war teams with full counselor support. No “busy work”: every task builds skills they’ll use tomorrow in school clubs or jobs. Parents spot initiative at home; teens discover the quiet power of owning their role.

Pathfinders (16+ year olds)

Camp’s ultimate flex: propose talent shows, lead Tribe War groups, and mentor younger groups. Then choose your path: stay a Pathfinder (max camp freedom + leadership rep), or opt into LIT Program for the exclusive 15-min daily workshops that prep you for staff roles. Only LITs get this hands-on training—no extra hours, just serious résumé fuel. Either way? You’re not aging up. You’re leveling up.

DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TEEN

Ever wonder what a day at camp is really like? We did, too.

So we asked the experts—our campers! We wanted an authentic, behind-the-scenes look at the camp experience, straight from the teens who are living it. Their insights paint the perfect picture of the fun, friendship, and growth that happens here every single day.

“Wake-up call hits and yeah … it isn’t the easiest. But once I’m up, the Slovenian sunrise through the cabin window is unreal. Pro move: each house has two showers but … get up early to use it first!” – Pablo, Spain

“Breakfast crew challenge: learn 3 phrases in another language. Today I taught Spanish speakers how to say ‘cheers’ properly. Pancakes + new friends = best combo.” – Chiara, Germany

“Group Activity: we went Bellyaking! No really my thing but it was kind of fun? Had a good laugh when our Counselor got stuck on the rocks! Trailblazers crew = instant legends.” – Lisa, Italy

“Downtime = chilling with other teens. No phones means the Slovenian kid in my group actually taught me Tarok … this weird card  game. Also had a wicked game of table tennis with one of the staff.” – Hammad, Turkey

“Lunch + a little free time. Potatoes … again. But overall the food has been pretty good and I love the salads at lunch. Not much freetime after lunch, but enough to play a game of beach volleyball.” – Diana, Latvia

“My favorite time of the day as there is so much to do! Personally loved horse riding as it meant getting away from the boys! But, also had fun at Gellyball as I got to shoot a few of them.” – Elena, USA

“The best part of the day. The afternoon chill out time we’re all usually pretty destroyed from the day so we hang out on our terraces just chilling. A few times I got back late because of rock climbing but … it was worth it!” – Wesley, USA

“Evening Reflection: one win, one challenge. Us girls debate the day’s biggest lesson. Surprise, surprise the boys just laugh about who fell in river again. If something sucked, you say it. Staff listen, and usually try to fix it.”- Grace, USA

“The best dinner is easily when we make our own pizzas! Of course, the Italians thought they knew what to do but being honest … they weren’t that good at it. I was super happy with my “Classica” as they call it in Slovenia – ham, cheese and mushrooms. Pro Tip: make sure the base is really thin otherwise the dough won’t book.” – Arlo, UK

“Tribe Wars = a bit of madness. I wasn’t a big fan to start off with, but it really grows on you. Best part is the Paint Wars on the last day when we … throw paint at each other.” Jane, Ireland

Chance to chill out with the group. Us Trailblazers enjoyed the campfire the most, zero filters. Well … I did anyway! Swapped stories while someone failed at s’mores. Realized the Dutch kid has same Spotify taste as me. A cool way to end the day. “

“Lights out? Sure. Actual sleep? Nah. Best late-night talks with people from Columbia to China. We actually did a McDonald’s run this year … and a midnight hike. Depends on the Counselor though.” – Karolina, Lithuania

REAL TALK - TEEN FAQs

First few hours: weird. First few days: freeing. First week: you won’t even miss it. We’ve had teens say the best part was actually talking to people instead of texting them … and that’s why they make such great connections and friendships!

82% of our teens arrive solo. Within 48 hours, you’ll have your crew. The international mix means everyone’s new to someone – no cliques, just instant common ground.

You might be surprised … it happens to 8 out of 10 teens, usually the first few nights. Staff won’t treat you as baby but will get you doing something that makes you forget why you were sad. Nearly all teens never even try to call home.

Real stories for university interviews, confidence navigating foreign places, a global friend group, and proof you can handle real responsibility. Plus, bragging rights that actually matter.

Last summer: 33 countries represented. Breakfast with someone from Malaysia, hiking with someone from Argentina, learning slang from England – it’s normal, not some diversity lesson.

Our menus are based on direct feedback from our campers and parents, so we believe it’s very good. Remember, not only are there 3 meals but also a snack plus potentially evening treat around the campfire. Now … if you’re really hungry why don’t you bake some slices, or treats in the afternoon cooking class?

No one’s expecting you to be Bear Grylls. You’ll learn basic skills, but it’s not survival school. If you’d rather craft than climb, that’s your call – we’ve got options. Activities are about connecting and making friends, not how fast / strong you are. So … chill!

Remember that time you thought something would suck but it was actually awesome? Yeah, this is that! And that’s why so many teens come back every year! No forced fun, no baby stuff. If it’s not cool, you don’t have to do it …

For teens House Time is at 11:00, but let’s be real – there’s always whispered conversations after. Staff know and don’t care as long as you’re quiet. Midnight hikes / McDonald’s trips happen, but they’re earned.

Your group is your crew for the week, but if someone’s being a jerk / mean, staff are on it. You don’t need to tell – staff will handle it so no one knows. Most conflicts turn into inside jokes by day 3. Explorer Camps is about friendships and connections, so our staff spend the most time focusing on this.
