WHAT MAKES THE EXPLORER TEAM SO SPECIAL?

THE EXPLORER TEAM

STAFF TRAINING

Staff participate in certified training for Emergency First Responders and also in School Mental Health lead by certified trainer Steve Hartley the Camp Director of Explorer Camps. The goal is to ensure all those working on camps are prepared for all emergencies that they can possibly be faced with, plus also empower them to actively work with children to build their own knowledge and resilency.

Additional information on Emergency First Responder training can be found here.

Explorer International Kids’ Camps has an extensive approach to risk management ensuring your children are safe at all times. This begins with a clear Risk Management process for all activities connected to camp focusing on both prevention but also how to react in the case of emergencies.

Staff have specific Risk Management folders for each activity which they go through before camps, and also every morning of the camp to ensure they understand the correct processes for activities.

On top of this is the Camp Manual which outlines in detail the day-to-day expectations and guidelines to all of the camp ensuring a common high standard is set plus maintained throughout. Staff are required to complete an online review of this Camp Manual so management can check understanding plus see what areas to potentially revist with specific staff members.

Explorer Camps prides itself on supporting its staff at all times and ensuring that they’re properly prepared for the camps. We conduct two live trainings for all staff with one being on-site at our camp location.

Our camp has a specific approach to communication plus behaviour management with our children, and we train this not only through our Camp Manual but also live.

Adding to this, we also run activities such as Paintball, Adventure Park, and the Giant Swing ourselves so we train our staff specifically for this on a seperate day.

EXPLORER STAFF SPECIFICS

  • POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

Staff use a number of different positivity techniques including the Explorer Reward System and Positivity Board to foster camper positivity.

  • SCAFFOLDING

A communication technique used by staff to empower independent thinking and continual improvement through temporary staff support.

  • SUCCESS COUNSELLING

A behavioural management technique which revolves around the concept that 'all behaviour is a sign of a need.' We get to the root of the problem.

  • VALIDATING

A key part of our campers' emotional growth is hearing their feelings, so validating their emotions is an important part of the Explorer approach.

  • PERSONALISED MENTORSHIP

Two mature staff members guide and advise your child the whole week ensuring that they are not only having fun but also learning about life.

  • BRIEF AND DEBRIEF

A key component to our campers' growth is firstly presenting ALL activities clearly (brief) and then reflecting on the lessons learnt (debrief).

  • CHILD-CENTRED LEARNING

Our children play an active part in their own learning whether it be the planning, decision making, implementation or discussion of camp tasks.

  • LEARNING THROUGH INQUIRY

Children are encouraged to question different aspects of the camp building critical thinking and problem solving skills.
