JUNIOR SUMMER CAMP FOR CHILDREN AGED 6 - 9

the benefits of a camp for 6 - 9 year olds

The PERFECT outdoor experience for children aged 6 – 9 for their first sleep-away experience. The small group size of approximately 8 children and a child to staff ratio of 4:1 ensures close personal attention from experienced counselors, giving the camp a real loving family feel.

Away from their parents, but under the watchful eyes of experienced Explorer staff, our young Discoverers develop independence, self-confidence, determination, compassion and social skills for life.

what makes explorer junior camps so special?

Every year over 70% of Explorer Camp’s children aged 6 – 9 return to the ‘home away from home’ Explorer family. According to satisfied Discoverers a contributing factor is the fact they’re part of a loving and caring family that takes care of each other forming really strong bonds.

The strong family values grown at Explorer Camps start well before the summer, with Discoverers connecting to staff and Big Brother / Sisters who are Teen Leaders helping your youngsters be more comfortable and happy.

AGE APPROPRIATE ACTIVITIES

One highlight of the Discoverer program is the incredible outdoor activities that are adjusted to suit their age, perfectly balancing challenge with fun.

Discoverers have their limits pushed while doing river tubing, horse riding, the Giant Swing, and zip lining. As a result they build more independence and self-confidence.

Personal Choice

First and foremost, our children aged 6-9 are able to decide whether to take part in an activity or not. It’s important for them to have the freedom to step back when they feel uncomfortable and only progress when they’re ready.

Perfect Level of Challenge

An important part of Explorer Camps is that our campers step outside of their comfort zones and try something new. The Discoverer Program is no different where they are encouraged through fun and exciting activities to take that step under constant expert supervision.

Something for Everyone

Even though Explorer Camps is very much an outdoor camp, there’s a great variety of different activities on offer.  A wide range of arts & crafts type sessions,

FAMILY FEEL & VALUES

Explorer Camps is built on a core of very strong family values and as a result our 6 – 9 year olds receive very personal and mature support

This ensures camp is a large welcoming community where everyone cares for one other building closer friendships, more comfort and a greater sense of belonging

Explorer Beads System

A MASSIVE hit with our Discoverers where they are rewarded wtih a set of beads for displaying positive characteristics and following the important camp values. Each camper has a necklace, and each day they can earnt beads and come home with a story to tell parents what they did to have such an amazingly colourful necklace.

Pre-Camp Attention

Perhaps the most important part of camp for our 6 – 9 year olds is the support given before the summer. Communication is shared between staff and Discoverers in the form of letters, videos and always a video call with the camp director. Even better, they’re connected with an older camper who acts as their ‘Big Brother or Big Sister’ who acts as support from the opening day till the last.

Small Close Groups

Discoverers have a max group size of 8 which means a staff to child ration of 1:4. This creates are really close and personal community feeling amongst the campers that gives them that important individual attention they need.

EXPERIENCED SUPERVISION

Your child is in safe hands with the average age of our counselors being 31 while each counselor comes from a teaching background.

This not only means that your child is being supervised by mature and experienced staff members, but also skilled mentors with years of experience working together with children.

1st Aid & Mental Health Training

All Explorer staff members are trained at both:

  • Emergency 1st Responders
  • Mental Health 1st Responders

As result, your child is entering a physically and mentally safe environment where he/she can grow and be happy!

Post-Camp Staff Support

All campers complete personal forms outlining their expectations and feelings about camp helping them prepare for the camp experience.

Staff send letters and videos to campers giving them an insight into the home away from home, so that ALL campers feel more secure and comfortable about their potential experience.

Suggested is also a video with the camp director who loves meeting up with all families to learn about your specific needs and desires.

General Training

On top of the 1st Aid and Mental Health courses, ALL staff complete a series of online modules covering a wide range of important topics from Child Supervision to Water Safety to Lost Camper Protocols. We cover it all.

Adding to this is a very extensive Risk Management approach which covers all of the activities ensuring that your children are safe at all times.

Lastly, we have live trainings created to build camp values and awareness of different activities so that we can have hands on experience with our risk management strategies.

BIG BROTHER / SISTER

Teen Leaders are paired up with a Discoverer BEFORE camp to act as an extra support for your child before and during the camps.

The goal is to give your child an older figure on camp who he / she can connect with during their time on camp. It’s a wonderful way to bring different ages together
